Chapters 7 - 9 Questions
1. In the first three chapters, you were asked to consider one of Amir’s primary motivations. Do you see further evidence of one of those motivations in Chapter Seven? What details support your view?
3. Hassan’s loyalty to Amir is pushed beyond measure. What incidents in earlier chapters hinted that this might come to pass?
4. You have been charting the various conflicts that arise in your Reader’s Notebook. What conflict is resolved in these chapters? What new conflict replaces it or takes center stage? Refer to incidents or statements from Chapter Seven, Eight or Nine that support your response.

Questions for Chapters 4 - 6
Complete the following four questions on your own. These are to be handed in by Thursday. (Typed, 12 point font, double spaced)
1. Chapters 4 - 6 offer further insight into the friendship of Amir and Hassan. Using details from the chapters, describe at least three of the attributes (qualities) of their friendship. Be specific and explain why those attributes may be important to the story.
2. In chapter five, the reader is introduced to Assef. Assef and his friends confront Amir and Hassan. How is Assef tied to the broader issues taking place in Afghanistan?
3. Analyze the scene where Assef confronts Amir and Hassan. Discuss what the young bully represents to Amir and Hassan.
4. At the end of Chapter Five, the reader learns that the next winter would the one where "Hassan stopped smiling." Consequently, when Chapter Six begins with the word "winter," the reader begins looking for what will cause Hassan's smile to disappear. However, Chapter Six does not reveal the tragedy at the heart of this novel. Instead, what does the author choose to focus upon in Chapter Six? Why do you think that choice is made?

3. The reader is introduced to Amir, the narrator, in this first chapter. What is the dominant emotion that he seems to feel in this chapter? What details support your response? Do you think this emotion will be important to what happens later? Explain your reasoning.
4. Summarize the major events of Chapters 1 – 3.
5. Describe three pivotal scenes that occur in these chapters. For each of the scenes you select, be sure to discuss what happens, who is involved, and why the scene is important to the story.

6. After having read Chapters 1 – 3, what do you know for sure about the narrative structure and setting of The Kite Runner? Do you think these elements are important to the novel’s plot?
7. Based on all that has happened in these chapters, what do you think is a primary motivation for the young Amir? What is a primary motivation for Hassan? Explain your reasoning.
8. What do you see as an emerging theme in the novel? Discuss what statements or incidents influence your reasons for selecting this theme.
