Complete the following four questions on your own. These are to be handed in by Thursday. (Typed, 12 point font, double spaced)
1. Chapters 4 - 6 offer further insight into the friendship of Amir and Hassan. Using details from the chapters, describe at least three of the attributes (qualities) of their friendship. Be specific and explain why those attributes may be important to the story.
2. In chapter five, the reader is introduced to Assef. Assef and his friends confront Amir and Hassan. How is Assef tied to the broader issues taking place in Afghanistan?
3. Analyze the scene where Assef confronts Amir and Hassan. Discuss what the young bully represents to Amir and Hassan.
4. At the end of Chapter Five, the reader learns that the next winter would the one where "Hassan stopped smiling." Consequently, when Chapter Six begins with the word "winter," the reader begins looking for what will cause Hassan's smile to disappear. However, Chapter Six does not reveal the tragedy at the heart of this novel. Instead, what does the author choose to focus upon in Chapter Six? Why do you think that choice is made?
